(Sharpie & PSe)

Over simplifying or social taxonomy of any one or any group is naive and honestly dangerous. Judging Mitt by his religion is dumb. There are many Mormons who are active in every political party. My roommate is a bizarre mix of libertarianism and marxism. Harry Reid of the US Senate is a mormon and a democrat and by the standards of the Western United States a dirty liberal (of course, so am I to some people).

This comic is based on the vastly ignorant Fr Dwight Longenecker’s post at catholic.org (here). One point of ignorance is his idea of maniac mormon being represented by Warren Jeffs, the polygamist of Texas & Colorado City fame. Warren Jeffs has never been a member of the same religion as Mitt Romney and Harry Reid. The doctrine of the FLDS church is Calvinist in nature with a slightly mormon color.

Most FLDS hate being called mormons and are very militant against mormons or members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) (many mormons, including me, view the term “mormon” as a type of hate speech–early in LDS history, the people attacking the church, killing many including Joseph Smith the founder, were the ones who invented the term).

I honestly think this is a none issue, but Fr Longenecker is trying to say it is okay to vote for Mitt because there really is nothing to be afraid of (on top of bing mildly prejudiced and insulting, but only mildly). This is very dangerous. I don’t think Mitt would ever ask LDS church leadership for advise (I never do for anything, I pray and I’m sure Mitt does the same), but Mitt is very much a mainstream mormon if not a bit of a fundamentalist by LDS standards (no polygamy though) and Anne definitely is a very conservative mormon. Fr Longenecker and others imply that Mitt’s religion will never inform his decisions and after watching many of the debates, I think Mitt is so much of a cultural mormon he can not escape the tenants and doctrines of the LDS church even if he left the church.

Now for some comedy. Below is a copy of an article written years ago by one of my favorite LDS columnists, Robert Kirby. I hope you enjoy it. Kirby’s article is a long list of LDS in-jokes, but I hope it does inform your understanding of mormons in a more practical way (BTW: I’m a po-mo son of mo-town unlike my mo-ld(y) dad who grew up in Detroit).

  1. Very informative, and a great comic too.
I hate how religion plays too big a part in politics.
Mr. X shouldn’t get voted in because he goes to the church of the flying spaghetti monster, so I will vote Mr. Y, whose policies I do not agree with, but does also, like me, believe that pink unicorns exist.
